Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland

This newly published four volume set mentions that about half of the 20,000 most common family names are locative, meaning they come from places; a quarter are relationship names, a fifth are nicknames and about 8% are occupational.

Read a Guardian article on the Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland published by the Oxford University Press here.  It's not cheap. Amazon.ca has it listed for $812.52, - they'll probably throw in free shipping.

Sigh. At that price, I wonder if our city central library will buy it...? Looks quite wonderful - I'd love to browse in it!

I've put it as a suggested purchase to OPL. No doubt they'll look hard at it.
